Creating a Website with Microsoft FrontPage

Does my web host even support FrontPage ?

Most web hosting companies support FrontPage extensions on your web site. This is however, still a consideration that you need to take into factor because there are still many companies that for some strange reason do not support or charge extra for FrontPage extensions.

Can I publish my FrontPage files using FTP

A site created with FrontPage should NOT be uploaded through FTP or some of the features will not work.

Please be aware that FrontPage maintains index and configuration files on the remote site. If you add web pages to the site with plain FTP, the changes will not be recorded, and FrontPage may not function normally. It is recommended that you use only FrontPage to modify a FrontPage site.

How to upload FrontPage files:

  1. Connect to the Internet
  2. Start FrontPage (Explorer). The getting started window will pop up.
  3. Select [Open FrontPage Web]
  4. Click [More Webs...]
  5. Type the name of your domain in the box entitled "Select a Web server or disk location"
  6. Click [List Webs], select the [Root Web] or the web you wish to edit, then input the username and password for your account.
  7. You can now start creating your website by using the example webs or by creating new pages yourself.
  8. Note : If you follow the above process, the [Publish FrontPage Web...] option is not required. The site is saved and updated automatically on the Web Server when changes are made.

There are a bunch of weird files and directories in my account. Can I delete them ?

NO. If you log in to your site with plain FTP and find some directories (for example, _vti* ) and files (for example, .htaccess ) that you did not upload, do not delete them. They belong there, and you will damage the FrontPage extensions if you remove them.
